Introduction to Radiation Effects

Enabling longer duration and harsher environment SmallSat missions-NASA Electronic Parts and Packaging (NEPP) and Radiation Test Solutions, Inc. is providing an introductory training module for radiation effects on space systems. Course will cover space radiation environments and their effects on spacecraft materials and electronics. We will discuss various natural radiation sources, and the temporal and spatial variations in these environments. The basic interactions of radiation in materials, and how that manifests in mechanical, optical, and electrical degradation. Discussion of mitigation techniques will be covered along with approaches for analysis and testing to verify radiation resilience of designs.

Radiation Guidelines for Notional Threat Identification and Classification (R-GENTIC): Webtool Walk-Through

Radiation Hardness Assurance (RHA) methodologies are beneficial for designs and designers that cannot afford radiation hardened parts. A walk-through of the online tool R-GENTIC will highlight the capabilities and benefits of identifying the hazard and weighing relative risk based on part technology or process. Guidance and reference material such as international standards or best practices are also pulled into the tool and help categorize what size, weight, and power (SWaP) trades present a risk. This tool aims to get designers thinking pro-actively about the impact and influence of radiation effects at the system level.

Spaces for All Humankind: Facilitating Diverse and Inclusive Aerospace Events

From Gallup: “Diversity represents the full spectrum of human demographic differences—race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, or physical disability. Inclusion refers to a cultural and environmental feeling of belonging.” With the introduction of programs like the AIAA Diversity Scholars Program and the Brooke Owens Fellowship, the aerospace community is successfully increasing access to the industry by bringing in bright students from underrepresented and nontraditional backgrounds and ensuring they have a place and voice. How can we continue the positive momentum and expand the efforts of the community to include diversity in the aerospace industry? The goal of this roundtable discussion is threefold: 1. Educate the community on what is currently being done to improve diversity and inclusivity. 2. Reflect on the state of diversity and inclusion across the industry, including conferences, workshops, workplaces, and classrooms. 3. Build actionable plans for how to continue to improve diversity and inclusion in the aerospace community, both on organizational and individual levels. The community we would like to see at this event should include all of those who are interested in expanding their diversity and inclusivity initiatives to improve themselves and organizations/events they are leading now or in the future. This includes anyone from current students to the heads of organizations. Note: The Aerospace Diversity and Inclusion Task Force is an ad hoc group of students and young professionals working to improve diversity and inclusion in the aerospace industry. Included in this group are Brooke Owens Fellows, Matthew Isakowitz Fellows, AIAA Diversity Scholars and Diversity Working Group, Students for the Exploration and Development of Space, and the Space Generation Advisory Council.

Achieving Compact and Effective Thermal Management in SmallSats

In the SmallSat architectures, tight packaging of mission critical electronics coupled with increasing power densities of those components is leading to thermal management becoming a critical design point. System engineers need to take advantage of any and all surfaces that can be used for heat dissipation. Having more capable heat transfer and thermal absorption available can increase effectiveness and limit the need for larger radiators. In this session, we’ll discuss current and future technologies that will enable higher power while maintaining low mass solutions.

Achieving Flexibility in a Market that Favors Stability

Increased capacity to orbit is allowing the space industry to scale. To realize full scale potential, launchers must be flexible enough to support a wide array of customers, and customers must be flexible enough to integrate with multiple vehicles – on short timelines. For many reasons, this can be prohibitively expensive and difficult to achieve for either party. Spaceflight has experience integrating a wide array of satellites across nearly all launchers in quick succession. Mitigating Space Debris: Planning Now to Meet Future FCC Regulations

This past April, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted to require additional space debris safety disclosures. And, although it delayed a vote to impose stricter space debris avoidance standards and a maneuverability requirement, these proposed regulations will be revisited. Consequently, an opportunity exists to provide the FCC with input on the future of space debris mitigation and regulation. This meeting will discuss in detail the new disclosures, the proposed regulations deferred by the FCC, and potential future regulations that can mediate the needs for space debris mitigation and industry growth.

SparkWing: The Off-the-Shelf Solar Array for SmallSats

Although solar arrays used to be custom designed and built for every single space platform, the fast developments on the smallsat market nowadays require a more "Commercial Off-The-Shelf" approach. FCC Proposed Maneuverability in LEO Requirements & TILE 2

Proposed FCC guidance states that all NGSO satellites planning to operate above 400 km in LEO have propulsion capabilities for station-keeping and to enable collision avoidance maneuvers. This complicates many CubeSat missions that are currently planned without propulsion.
